    4 Stars
Sharp lens in a compact size. Focus is challenging at long focal lengths.
I'm not a "Pro" photographer but I have been obsessed with using and learning about cameras in the past few years. I have used the 35-100mm f2.8 lens consistently as it's been the most versatile lens in my bag for outdoor photography. Pleasingly sharp to my eyes. I'd recently gotten into taking action shots at my nieces games with the 35-100 and loved the results. I've found it very difficult to judge long zoom lenses because they have much shallower depth of field than shorter/wide angle lenses. DOF becomes very shallow once you go beyond 100mm and EXTREMELY shallow at 400mm. If your shooting a distant subject and cropping in a lot, then DOF is big enough to not be an issue. However cropping heavily will kill your image quality. Filling the frame with 400mm AND getting your subject in focus can be very challenging to the point of frustration. This is where I struggle to decide how much of my difficulties with getting really sharp/in focus photos with this lens is because of the very shallow depth of field or the lens itself not being sharp enough to justify the price tag. To be honest after extensive use I think it falls somewhere in between. I've shot some subjects from close range in pretty good outdoor lighting and had many shots slightly out-of-focus and kept the sharpest in focus pictures I could get. My best shots at 100mm seemed slightly sharper than the 400mm shots.. but again the Depth Of Field is also much shallower and more difficult to achieve good focus. The lens has Optical Stabilization built-in which is nice and also has a 5mm-Infiniti switch on the lens which helps with focusing faster on distant subjects. Overall I like the lens a lot and think it can take great sharp images with practice and experience. Even though there is not much to compare it to in the Micro 4/3rds long zoom arena.I have provided a bunch of previously RAW unedited photos converted straight to the highest quality JPEG I could of several animals that I took at a recent trip in Custer State Park, South Dakota to allow other viewers to be the judge. Most of the images were shot at pretty close range (around 10 feet away for 100mm shots and 20 feet for 400mm shots). The First is of a donkey at the shortest telephoto focal length of 100mm @F8 ISO400. The Second one is a Buffalo 400mm@F8 ISO400. A Third one is a Deer 350mm@F5.9 ISO800. The Fourth Photo is of a bird on a bridge that I shot at 400mm at only about 10 feet away. You can see how razor thin the DOF is at 400mm when you get near it's minimum focusing distance. In my opinion the shots are sharp but not razor sharp and I shot several photos with several attempts to get each of the subjects in focus in AFS(Automatic Focus Single) and CAF (Constant Auto Focus). I selected the sharpest of each of the photos that I attempted. Unfortunately all photos are heavily compressed and lower resolution after being posted on the internet. So keep that in mind.Pros:Very long and useful focal range of 100mm-400mmWeather sealed and nearly all-metal constructionAmazingly small and relatively light (2.1 Pounds) for such a range of zoomImages appear to be as sharp as my 35-100mm f2.8 at 100mm to around 300mmAuto-focus tracking seems to be pretty solid on still or slow moving subjectsCons:Zoom range from around 300mm to 400mm is pretty stiff and jerkyDue to the physics of long focal lengths getting sharp in focus images can be difficult at close rangeNailing focus on fast moving subjects is difficult with a low hit rate in my experience (May be due to camera/sensor more then the lens itself)Images at long end of the focal range don't seem to be tack sharp (could be due to focal length and missed focus)

5.0 out of 5 stars Lives up to the hype. Amazing lens!
Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2021
I had been skeptical of the hype around this lens but I have to admit that the Panasonic Leica 100-400, is a fantastic buy. The photos that I have included are some of my early test shots at the local zoo. This lens will get used a lot.

    Best features:
    1. Small size. Anything close in angle of view for APS-C or Full Frame would be 2 to 3 times bigger and heavier. I am more likely to take this with me.
    2. Sharpness. This is as good if not better than any Nikon lens I have used and it is sharp at all focal lengths. Excellent contrast, too.
    3. The image stabilization of the lens/camera combination is nothing short of amazing. Handheld shots taken at 1/200 sec. that you can pixel peep are beyond belief.

My only concerns so far are:

    1. The supposedly weak lens mount so I am being sure to hold it at the mid point at the tripod collar. I remove the extra tripod foot when hand-holding.
    2. It is not a fast lens at the 400mm length. Even at ISO 800 with the dual stabilization (which really works well), you are pushing the limits of handheld photography. ISO 1200 or higher is required with anything other than bright daylight or if the subject is moving.
    3. Learning the correct autofocus settings is still a challenge. In most situations, it is fast and accurate. I have a G85 with all the firmware updates but it is still tricky to find the subject if it is a small portion of the image. I might need to use the manual/auto focus combination setting just to get it started in the correct range or play with the focus area settings.

    5.0 out of 5 stars I Never Give 5 Stars . . .
Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2016
I've been a stock photographer for nearly nine years and recently switched from a full frame DSLR to the 4/3 format. Weight reduction was the driving force behind that decision but after using my OMD em 5II camera for over a year, the most positive change (improvement) is the ability to see the effect of your exposure, before pushing the shutter. Every shot can now be perfectly exposed no matter how difficult the lighting situation.

My decision to buy the Panasonic 100-400mm Zoom Lens over the other purchase options has also exceeded my expectations. The zoom range is the most apparent improvement but it's not what make this lens such a great choice. Unlike most zoom lenses which are less than tack sharp at the extremes of their zoom range, this lens is super sharp all the way out to 400mm (800mm equivalent). It doesn't matter if you're using it to photograph an up close dragonfly or a distant bird your photograph will be sharp (assuming you've made the correct exposure decisions).

The image stabilization is excellent as is the focusing which is extremely fast and accurate. I've even been able to do hand held focus stacking (thanks to Olympus Technology), with very good results (see attached dragonfly photo). As stated by other reviewers, the zoom is rather stiff but not unlike other professional lenses and is very acceptable in my opinion. Due to the limitations of the current focusing technology in 4/3 format this lens will not keep up with fast action like flying birds but then this is no surprise as I've had like results using my other lenses.

While I have never given a five star rating before, I highly recommend this lens to anyone who wants "near perfection" in an extreme zoom lens. Without a doubt this lens has exceeded my expectations and is worth 5 stars and it's rather exorbitant price tag.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent birding lens
Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2019
Amazing glass in this lens. I use it solely for birding on a Lumix g9 body and have been extremely pleased. It is fast and not bad even in low light (great on a tripod or monopod). It can be a little less sharp on the 400mm end but if you use a monopod the images are still very good. It’s a trade off for the extra reach, which I find I always need. In lens image stabilation is excellent and even though the lens is heavy it is very comfortable to hand-hold (and I am admittedly on the weak side).

My only complaint before I realized I had the lens on lock was the tight zoom barrel. I read online that I needed to make sure the lens was not on lock and I swore up and down that mine wasnt, until I realized it was. So double-check that. Now that I have the lens unlocked I have no complaints about the zoom ring.

This lens is amazing. Lightweight and compact for a 100-400 mm with a very practical design IMO. Outstanding image quality in terms of clarity/contrast/sharpness with, quiet but snappy focus (only hunts for focus in low light). Chromatic aberration is fairly well controlled for a super telephoto only becoming noticeable in extreme situations like shooting a blackbird against a bright sky. I found no issues with and really like the zoom lock feature and the easy to remove tripod foot. as well as the innovative way I can go from horizontal to vertical frame when attached to a monopod or a tripod. It's not an inexpensive lens but it does offer excellent quality and functionality! I'm quite pleased and think the investment is worth it!
